A paradigm shift needed

If the Tamil leaders still believe in “Sinhalaya Modaya” then they are mistaken. The Sinhalas have a very large heart and from the time of the Portuguese or even before, the Sinhalas have been misled by various political leaderships and had entered into agreements that had finally cost the Sinhalas the country itself. The Sinhalas believed the Portuguese and entered into an agreement to “give” the latter a plot of land equal to that of the skin of a bull. However the Portuguese had intended something else and it cost the Sinhalas a land area much bigger than the area of the skin of a bull. The Dutch did not honour the agreement with the Sinhala king and continued to occupy the Eastern coast while commissioning Tamils to write so called history books such as Yalpana Vaipava Malai which according to some Tamil historians are nothing but poetry. The English deceived the Sinhala leaders with the Sinhala English treaty of 1815 and finally occupied the whole country. The Sinhalas have been cheated through out history because of their friendliness and hospitality and the Tamil leaders have been following the English, of course with the connivance of the latter, and have tried to displace the Sinhalas from the centre with various kinds of “orders” emanating from the English.

The Tamil leaders still think of so called devolution of power to the North and Eastern Provinces as a solution to what they call the national question or the ethnic problem. To begin with there is neither a national question nor an ethnic problem in Sri Lanka but a refusal by the Tamil Vellalas first, then by the rest of the Tamil community and finally by the Muslims to admit that a nation had been built in Sri Lanka at least during the time of King Gemunu (not Dutugemunu, a name coined by the NGO agents of that era) and that they could join that nation without losing their cultural identities including the language of communication. It is not a big problem to be solved and what is needed is a paradigm shift from the so called ethnic minorities.

The Muslims did not have an ethnic problem vis-à-vis the Sinhalas until Ashroff came into the scene. It is true that there were Sinhala Muslim riots in 1915 but until Ashroff joined the Tamil leaders in the seventies there had been no ill will towards each other and 1915 riots were used by the English to suppress the Sinhala Buddhist leaders who had sprung locally in various areas and who had been nobodies until then. The attitude of the English towards the new Sinhala Buddhist leadership enabled the latter to become “somebodies” in no time and in fact it helped the new leadership to establish themselves as against the old English speaking Sinhala Christian leadership trained by the English. Ashroff knew how to play the ethnic card in the seventies and joined the Tamil leaders in Vadukkodai in adopting the infamous resolution by the name of that town.

The Muslims ironically had an ethnic problem vis-à-vis the Tamil Vellalas in the latter part of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century as the Jaffna Vellalas wanted to be the leaders of the Muslims as well. Ponnambalam Ramanathan had proclaimed that he represented the Muslims as well in the Legislative Assembly as they were Tamil speaking. Muslim leaders such as Abdul Aziz and Siddhi Lebbe resented this idea and they claimed that the Muslims were a separate ethnic group though they spoke the same language as the Tamils. The English colonialists finally had to give in to the demands of the Muslim leaders and appointed a Muslim member to represent the Muslims in the Legislative Assembly. Thus if there was any ethnic problem it was between the Muslims and the Tamils and not between the Muslims and the Sinhalas.

In the seventies as the demand for devolution of power to the Northern and the Eastern provinces gained momentum under the auspices of the English and the Indians under the pretext that these provinces had been so called traditional homelands or historical habitats of the Tamils, Ashroff saw an opening for himself and joined the bandwagon to become the yuavaraj of the Muslims in the eastern province and thus created the Muslim Congress in order to achieve his ambition. He knew that he could become the yuavaraj only by carving out probably a non contiguous Muslim area from the so called North Eastern province which could not be substantiated on historical, geographical, demographical, cultural or any other basis, and hence supported the idea of devolution of power on an “ethnic” basis with ulterior motives. Ashroff conveniently forgot that it was the Sinhala King Senerath who settled the Muslims along the east coast when they were harassed by the Portuguese. For the Sinhala king to settle such large numbers in the eastern province in the seventeenth century and for his son to lease the coastal area up to a guava to the Dutch it is mandatory that the present eastern province came under the Sinhala kings. Perhaps Ashroff did not know that when Robert Knox was captured in present day Muttur, he was not taken to a Muslim ruler but to the Sinhala king in Mahanuwara. In spite of all these history behind the Sinhalas Ashroff wanted to deny the eastern province to the Sinhalas and shouted against so called colonization by what the racists called the Sinhala government. He forgot that the Muslims are in the eastern province as a result of “colonization” of certain areas of the eastern province with the Muslims. If the Sinhalas in the area had shouted against so called colonization by the Muslims there wouldn’t have been a Muslim population in the eastern province.

Further, in 1817 or so the English appointed a Muslim tax collector in Uva Vellassa completely defying the Sinhala English treaty of 1815, which said that the country would be ruled according to the Sinhala laws. The gentlemanly English cheated the Sinhala leaders with the treaty. The Sinhala leaders would not have signed the treaty without that particular clause and the clause on protection of Buddhism, which have been parts of the unwritten constitution of King Gemunu some two thousand two hundred years ago, which the Tamil and Muslim racist leaders wanted to erase with the support of the English colonialists. When the treaty was breached by the English the Sinhala people rose against the gentlemanly act of the English and it became the first independence struggle by the Sinhalas against the English Christian colonialists. The English who were and are not only gentlemanly but humanely, perhaps not as much as Prabhakaran, massacred the Sinhalas in the present eastern province making them to run for their lives to the present southern province. It was how the present eastern province became devoid of the Sinhala population and the government has a right to settle many more Sinhala people in the present eastern province irrespective of what the racist Tamil and Muslim leaders and the NGO lapdogs and lapbitches of the western Christian colonialists and the Blakes and other westerners have to say. The history again shows us that the Tamils and the Muslims were silent when the Sinhalas were harassed by the western Christian English, very often taking the side of the colonialists. The Muslims at least now should realize that the western Christian modernity and Judaic Christian culture is against the Muslim culture in the whole world and that they should unite with the Sinhalas to fight against western Christian colonialism.

MULTICULTURALISM IN THE NON WESTERN WORLD

Multiculturalism in the west implies monoculturalism and the hegemony of the western Judaic Christian culture. The rest of the cultures are allowed to be present as long as they do not pause a threat to the western Judaic Christian culture. Multiculturalism certainly does not mean equiculturalism and all the cultures other than the western Judaic Culture are present always in a subservient manner with respect to the hegemonic western Judaic Christian culture. For example the Sinhala Buddhists living in USA or UK are allowed to observe the Wesak full moon day in temples in the cities and towns but not on the Wesak day itself but on the following Saturday or most probably the following Sunday. Though Wesak is supposed to be an international holiday, whatever is meant by that, people go to work on that day and observe sil on the following Sunday. However, the westerners could not maintain this hypocrisy of multiculturalism for long as the Islamic culture which is more aggressive than most of the other cultures has come to the forefront not only in some Muslim countries but in some of the big (influential) western countries themselves. The west cannot afford to be silent under the pretext of multiculturalism when Islamic culture is challenging western Judaic culture in the lion’s den as if it were, and the western politicians have begun to chant their mantra that multiculturalism has failed. If Islamic culture like the other cultures confined itself to the mosque and occasional religious festivals the west would be still shouting from roof tops how multiculturalism is working wonderfully in those countries. I am waiting for a postmodernist to deconstruct multiculturalism in the west and show to the world that it is monoculturalism with the hegemony of western Judaic Christian culture being felt from supermarket to the legislature and from pre-school to the university. However postmodernism being part of hegemonic Judaic Christian culture is very unlikely to attempt at difficult deconstructions.

How does multiculturalism work in the so called non western world? There are some quarter bright academics in the universities who have gone on Fulbright scholarships or fellowships and others who think that they belong to the centre of the left without realizing that they have been left out by the society with the former opining that we reject anything from the west claiming that it is Judaic Christian while the latter claiming that the so called nation state model of the west is used by whom they call the so called Jathika Chinthanaya group. It is clear that they tell two different stories in respect of our “borrowings” or “absorptions” from the knowledge created in the west. Perhaps they should organize yet another seminar in a five star hotel to find out what we are up to in the Chinthana Parshadaya. I can help them by giving our thoughts on multiculturalism in the non western world with special reference to Sri Lanka, the way these pundits title their profound theses and dissertations.

Multiculturalism or any other concept is defined in the west whether the quarter bright would accept it or not. What some of these people would not know is that knowledge is constructed and not discovered, and that knowledge is constructed relative to the sense organs, the mind and the culture in human societies. We emphasize, unlike those who have been slaves of western knowledge that the concepts, theories etc., found in different societies differ from each other. Western knowledge is created in what we call the Greek Judaic Christian Chinthanaya and of course in the western Judaic Christian culture. The Judaic Christian Chinthanaya should not have a monopoly in creating knowledge, though at present except for a very few in Sri Lanka the western knowledge is considered to be discovered according to some ill defined scientific method, and thus giving it the status of a corpus of absolute truth. We do not have the freedom to chose, if I may use terms used by the westerners for their propaganda work, a system of knowledge that is suitable for us. We are enforced to teach and learn knowledge created in the west and if that is not colonialism what is colonialism?

We are not scared of western knowledge, and having had access to some parts of that knowledge I know how weak is the foundations on which the western knowledge is built. If not for western technology and the power of politics, western knowledge would not have survived and unlike our critiques claim there is no reason as to why we should be scared of western knowledge. However, we do not reject western knowledge and we would absorb any western knowledge that is suitable to our society and assimilate it into our culture without imitating it. We do not have to borrow the concept of a so called nation state as Gemunu who ruled this country some two thousand three hundred years ago had introduced the concept of the Sinhala Buddhist state which could be called an eksesath rajya. The eksesath rajya has some features of the nation state and for this reason some pundits would think that we work within the ambit of nation state and have no alternative.

Multiculturalism as far as the non western world is concerned is equiculturalism as the western intellectuals and the politicians want that way as far as the cultures other than the Judaic Christian culture. The westerners who define and interpret concepts for the others want the non western world to treat the cultures that are present in a particular country other than the Judaic Christian culture to be equal. However, that does not mean that these cultures are given the highest place when it comes to governing, education from nursery to the university, political structures, economic models etc., are concerned. In these activities in which usually the so called elite in a country are involved, the Judaic Christian culture reins supreme. The citizens of a country adopt their own cultures in the other fields and in many countries a particular culture is chosen due to historical and social conditions as the predominant culture, though the westerners would have wanted all the other cultures to be treated equally.

For example in India the western Judaic Christian culture is the supreme and hegemonic culture in the fields that have been mentioned above and nobody in the elite society would challenge the status quo for the fear of losing social status. In the other fields Hindu culture is accepted as the predominant culture and Dhoni would swear that more than seventy five percent of the cricketers in the Indian squad for the world cup were Hindus. We were shown on television how Hindu devotees celebrated the winning of the world cup in cricket originated in Christian England (there is a school of thought according to which cricket originated in France of all the places) in the traditional Hindu ways but there were no sarva agamika celebrations. All the cultures in India in the other fields are not equal and the supremacy of Hindu culture is not questioned in India.

It is in Sri Lanka that multiculturalism in the fields other than education etc., are interpreted to be equiculturalism and it is only recently that the Sinhalas have become aware of various interpretations of multiculturalism.

MULTICULTURALISM IN THE WEST

Many things have been said on multiculturalism by people who have lived in the western countries and also by those who live in Sri Lanka echoing their masters and mistresses. Once the masters fail to “grasp” the world due to their incompetence and ignorance the imitators have no chance at all, but they do not realize that the masters and the mistresses are only singing the swan song. We have number of times tried to expose the myths surrounding terms such as multiculturalism, human rights, fundamental rights etc. that have been coined by the intellectuals in the west in order to safeguard their system. The knowledge created by the western intellectuals whether in Physics or Sociology is used by the politicians, sometimes with the connivance of the former, to oppress the people in the other parts of the world. Knowledge is the most powerful weapon used by western Christian modernity to keep their empire going without giving the others an opportunity to realize what is happening. Occasionally so called radical intellectuals in the west would come out with concepts such as neocolonialism which give the impression that there is only economic colonialism or perhaps political colonialism concealing the most dangerous cultural colonialism. Multiculturalism meant monoculturalism as far as the west is concerned and it is clear that the concept has failed and the western intellectuals will have to create another concept or to reinterpret multiculturalism to suit western cultural colonialism.

If some politicians in the west claim that multiculturalism has failed then it implies that they have not achieved what they had wanted to achieve using this particular concept. Multiculturalism has been used in two different ways in the west and the rest of the world. In the western countries multiculturalism meant allowing the non Christian communities to continue with their cultural practices while Christian cultures dominating in education, formal as well as non formal, in politics and in general in everyday life. This became a necessity for two reasons. Many people of non Christian cultures migrated to “mother” countries such as England and France in large numbers and with the world becoming “smaller” mainly due to air travel and television the migrants could retain links with their countries of origin culturally at least superficially. The Sinhala Buddhists living in many parts of the west have established temples with Bhikkus invited from Sri Lanka attending to the cultural needs of the community. Then they also invite artistes from Sri Lanka and with modern technology they have been able to have CDs videos that capture aspects of Sinhala Buddhist culture. It has been possible to import vegetables fruits and sweetmeats from Sri Lanka and also from some other Asian and African countries and one would find coconut scrapers in many Sinhala homes. The Sinhala Buddhists have also set up ‘daham pasal” and the children take part in many cultural shows and the Sinhala Buddhist culture is “preserved” in the homes of the migrants at least in English or French medium, as some of the children are not very fluent in Sinhala to say the least.

I have given the example of the Sinhala Buddhist families but it is true in general. There is a sense of multiculturalism but the dominant culture is nothing but western Judaic Christian culture. A pundit may say that there is no homogeneous western culture but though there may be differences, in essence the dominating culture is nothing but Judaic Christian. The dominant culture is felt and seen everywhere from the supermarket to media and from pre school to university and one cannot escape this influence by establishing daham pasal. When the daham pasal in Sri Lanka are a poor distant relative in the educational system in Sri Lanka itself there is very little one could expect from the daham pasal in the west. As mentioned above Sinhala Buddhist culture is preserved in English or French as the case may be in the western countries.

The Sinhala Buddhists living in the west are not aggressive and many of them would celebrate Easter, Christmas etc., with Easter eggs, Christmas trees and all the other paraphernalia associated with these events. Queen’s birthday, thanksgiving day etc., are important days in the calendar of some of the Sinhala Buddhists, and in general they would not try to exhibit their Sinhala Bauddhakama to the society at large. Except when the ladies wear the saree (especially osariya) it is difficult even for a “knowledgeable) native white person to identify Sinhala Buddhists shopping in the local supermarket going by cultural symbols. The Sinhala Buddhists are definitely not a threat to western Judaic Christian culture and no Sinhala Buddhist “scholar” living in the west would dare to challenge the dominance of western Christian knowledge and certainly no Sinhala Buddhist organization would demand that Buddhism should be made compulsory at schools. This kind of existence of a culture did not matter at all to the west and the westerners would “proudly” say that that there was cultural freedom in their countries and could coin the word multiculturalism as if equal status had been given to all the cultures in the country. Of course, the westerners knew multiculturalism meant only many cultures existing superficially but not equiculturalism at all. They thought that allowing little freedom to practice the relevant culture would not do any harm and the Judaic Christian culture would dominate without any challenge. In fact it was a case of more the merrier as the number of cultures existing in a country increased they would not organize themselves into one group to challenge the Judaic Christian culture.

However, this would not proceed the way the westerners expected mainly due to the Islamic culture. It is very aggressive and also dominating. Cultures such as Sinhala Buddhist would not have survived in the west if not for the world becoming “smaller” but there are two cultures in the world other than the Judaic Christian culture that would survive under the most challenging conditions. It is true that the Sri Lankan Tamils in the west have become boisterous in the recent past but that has happened under very different conditions. The Tamil Hindu culture is not aggressive in general though the Cholas attempted to dominate the South and South East Asia. It was more Chola than Tamil and could be attributed to the aggressive Chola political attitudes more than to Hindu culture. The Sri Lankan Tamils in the west have become aggressive under the auspices of the English and the other western nations, and the moment the patronage given to them by the west is withdrawn they would become submissive. The two cultures I have in mind are the Jewish culture and the Islamic culture. Both of them have the same origins in the western Asia, and Europeans first found the Jewish culture to be very dominating and aggressive. Shakespeare probably was a witness to the struggle between the Christian culture and the Jewish culture and the two cultures have come to some understanding with the emergence of the Judaic Christian culture though it may not be very deep. The Catholic culture has not shown any mercy to the Jews as Hitler and German Catholic culture were to demonstrate but today it is the Judaic Christian culture that is dominating the world. The Judaic Christian culture is facing the greatest challenge from the Islamic culture and the west has realized that their “soft skills” are not quite adequate in managing multiculturalism as far as Islamic culture is concerned.

Islamic culture has been a threat to Europe from the Iberian empire days and it could even be speculated that the Christian and the Jewish cultures came to an understanding under the threat of Islamic culture. The struggle between the Judaic Christian culture and the Islamic culture is taking place over the globe and it has been continuing for the last sixty years or so in the Palestine and the western Asia and also in North Africa. Libya is neither only oil nor democracy as most of the western educated pundits would say but culture as well. The struggle has been carried over to Europe and the westerners find that the concept of ‘multiculturalism” is not going to help them anymore. Islamic cultural challenge has to be defeated and when the western politicians claim that multiculturalism has failed we know what they mean by that.

A Pole Reversal?

The earth’s magnetic field is said to be due for reversal sometime soon. This is when the current North Pole would become the South Pole and vice versa. Scientists have detected a gradual but accelerating shift of the North Pole and a decrease in the strength of the earth’s magnetic field over the last several centuries; evidence, they claim, points to an impending reversal of the earth’s magnetic Poles. Though such pole flips thought to have had happened throughout the history of the planet it is not known what causes it or when it would happen again; it could be hundreds of years or millions of years from now. I am not an expert nor do I have much interest in this theory however we may be witnessing a different kind of Pole reversal taking place in an altogether different sphere; this time in the socio-cultural sphere.

There are two extreme cases of socio-cultural organizations in the human society; one promotes collectivity over individuality and the other promotes individuality over collectivity. Western societies under Judeo-Christian culture are pro-individualist and the Arabic societies under Muslim culture are pro-collectivist. These are so called Poles in the sense that there could be a middle wherein collectivity and individuality is balanced. This categorization may be too black and white so to speak but earth’s magnetic field isn’t a perfect dipole either.

With regard to the Pole reversal, I believe that collectivist societies are beginning to become more individualistic while individualistic societies are gradually turning towards collectivism. Even more interestingly, it is their own individuality coupled with the collectivism of the Muslim societies that drives the individualistic Western world towards collectivism and conversely it is their own collectivity coupled with the individualism in Judeo-Christian societies that drives the collectivistic Arab world towards individualism. The current socio-political development in the respective societies points to this phenomenon.

I think that the so called pro-democracy (term given by the western media) agitations in the Arab world are a sign of these societies turning towards individualism. They may be frustrated by their authoritative governments which in turn can be thought of as a form of collectivism but it cannot be ruled out that they are also unsatisfied with their culture that forces them to conform to a certain way of life that restrict individuality. According to Islamic scholars the Quranic view of the world is a collectivist one. It is not a secret that Muslims in general consider the rights of their society to be more important than their own. Therefore the so called revolution that is taken place in the Arab world could be thought of as an indirect revolt against the collectivism in their society. Although it cannot be determined what part the western governments play in this reversal, it is apparent that Muslims who are in the forefront of these agitations are the liberal minded western educated youth. It is also interesting that these youth use internet for communication via what are known as social networking sites. Clearly, these are inventions of the Judeo-Christian culture. In my opinion, unlike live physical interactions in natural environments these types of communications, despite their efficiency help isolate individuals further from the society and promotes individualism.

On the other hand, the threat of terrorism by the so called Muslim fundamentalists is causing the western world to curb the rights of individuals over that of the society. The governments are given right to eavesdrop on conversations and to access private information about individuals in lieu of national security. These types of legislatures would have been deemed as encroachments of individuality decades ago but today these and other stringent security measures at public places (again against individual rights) are a part of daily life in today’s western societies.

To date, people of different cultures living in western countries can enjoy their cultural habits, at least symbolically, because of the respect of individuality granted by the Judeo-Christian culture, however western societies are increasingly unnerved by the growing pockets of sub-cultures, especially among Muslims, in their midst that resist assimilation in to the western culture. It is unlikely that Judeo-Christianity will tolerate the existence of a sub-culture within their society especially if such societies are equipped with economic and political power. As a way of discouraging the formation of non-western sub cultures in their midst, western societies may be driven to be less individualist and more collectivist in the future. The noted growth in minority populations in proportion to the majority in western countries may also hasten these trends.

Additionally, there are inherent forces that drive the western societies into collectivism. Some of these may be attributed to the ill effects of capitalism. It is clear that individual right to accumulate wealth is what sustains capitalism. This is not just an economic right as one would tend to believe but is a cultural trait as well (greed is not discouraged in the western societies). However, too much greed and too much power on the hands of a few drives a capitalist system into saturation as evident by the current economic melt down. The regulatory mechanism put in place to circumvent such melt downs in the future could indirectly affect how individuals are allowed to exercise their rights over that of the larger society. Natural disasters such as hurricane Katarina and the government’s inefficiency in coping with such catastrophes have also highlighted the importance of collectivism in western societies.

Thus it appears that forces both from within and outside of the Arab and the western worlds are driving those societies towards their respective opposite cultural Poles. What is interesting is that each cultural Pole is its own force of change in addition to being a negative force on the opposite Pole. This is not a surprise since both types of socio-cultural organizations have a common feature in spite of their apparent opposing nature. First, both cultures consider humans to have rights over any other living or non living thing in the world which effectively separates human beings from its environment, and then individuals, who have been already separated from their environments, are also separated from the society. The only difference between the two cultural Poles is that one considers individuals to be more important than the collection of individuals and the other considers the collections of individuals is more important than the individuals that comprises it. The Basic commonality of these two Poles entices/forces the people of these cultural Poles to switch to the opposite Pole when at extreme ends in their cultural biases. Unfortunately a balance between individualism and collectivism is not an option; as such these cultures go through a continuous cycle of Pole reversals.

To achieve a balance between these two extremes, a culture should be immune to the forces that drive it to the extremes both from within and outside. In such a socio-cultural system, I would imagine the humans to be inseparable from their environment and individuals to be inseparable from their society. In this context, individualism and collectivism become irrelevant concepts. I believe that such a society could adept to any situation either by individuals being more important than the society or by the society being important than the individual or by both being important or by both being unimportant.

Leadership Quality vs. Quality Leadership

We can all agree that some people are more equipped to lead than others. Good leaders are the ones that can convince masses to follow them and possess knowledge and vision to lead their followers to satisfactory outcomes. In an ideal environment where people are free to choose their leader and potential leaders are free to canvas their cases, one might think that the choice of the masses is as good as it gets. But then such ideal environments do not occur naturally. On the other extreme there are situations where leaders are not elected but selected by others on behalf of the masses e.g. Team leader or director of a corporation, head prefect of a school, captain of a cricket team etc. In these situations, selectors, assuming they are unbiased, follow a certain criteria to assess what is called the leadership quality of a prospective leader. It is true that we may be able to define some such qualities of person that could be generally applied to any situation. But no matter how we define them, these qualities are relative to one’s Chinthanaya. In other words, leadership qualities defined in one Chinthanaya cannot be used to find a quality leader in a different Chinthanaya. This is not hard to fathom, however the situation is more complicated when the leader has to achieve success in a situation that is not created within his (and his followers) own Chinthanaya. This is typically what we as a nation of non Judeo-Christian culture has to face most of the time. The situations in which we try to achieve success, whether it is in business, school or in sport are inventions of the Judeo-Christian culture. But the prospective leaders have been brought up in the Sinhala Buddhist culture (they need not be Sinhala or Buddhist per se). So when it comes to selecting a leader what usually happens is that selectors opt for one or the other definition, resulting in a leader that fits either the Sinhala Buddhist definition of leadership quality or that of the Judeo-Christian.

No person will fit both the definitions and neither alone will bring success. Such leaders will either fail to win the trust of their underlings or will not possess the knowledge of the path to success or both.

The ideal leader is the one that fits the Sinhala Buddhist Chinthanaya definition of a leader who has an extraordinary talent to absorb the Judeo-Christian situation to his won culture without imitating it. These ones are hard to find.

ON HISTORY AND RECONCILIATION

There are some pundits who would refer to me as a “historian” when they want to criticize certain views I have expressed on the history of Tamils and Muslims in this country. They do not bring an iota of evidence against my views but try to sling mud at me by referring to me as a “historian” knowing that I do not have any formal qualifications in history. However, these pundits would not believe me when I say that there was no big bang as such and the so called big bang is a way of having a God without referring to a creator, in spite of the fact that I have formal qualifications in Mathematics and Relativistic Astrophysics from their so called recognized Universities. They will ridicule me for saying that the big bang is nothing but creation albeit without a so called creator and that it is a theory created in the Greek Judaic Christian Chinthanaya in Judaic Christian culture. They will forget my formal qualifications from their universities and would love to brand me as an extremist. It is clear that even among the pundits it is not the qualifications that matter but what one says. If they agree with what somebody says they will highlight his qualifications, if he has any qualifications at all. If the person concerned has no qualifications in the relevant field they will marvel at his knowledge, the analytical skills, intuition etc., in spite of him being a scholar in a different field, and praise his intellectual capacity to the hilt. The pundits recognize a person only if they agree with what that person has to say and not because of his qualifications. With pundits getting qualifications from the same sort of institutions very often they will agree with each other. Whether the pundits like it or not the Tamils in Jaffna are descendants of imported Vellalas by the Dutch, the Malayalam speaking people and the Sinhalas who were the majority in Jaffna when the Portuguese conquerors with priests and soldiers coming in the same ships set foot on this soil. The priests came to convert the people into Catholicism peacefully and the soldiers came to do the same forcefully while engaging in other activities as well.

In any given field whether history or physics theory “A” is preferred to theory “B” if the explanatory power of “A” is better than that of “B”. Could the pundits explain with their so called theories why the Hindu society in Jaffna is different from that in Tamil Nadu in particular and in India in general? Why is that the Vellala caste in Jaffna is the dominant caste and not the Brahmin caste? What happened to the Brahmins in Jaffna if there was a traditional Hindu society there, as in India, say from Elara days? Why is that the Tamil spoken in Jaffna in general is very much similar to that spoken in Tamil Nadu in general (It is futile to talk of differences in Tamil spoken by people in Tamil Nadu and evade the issue) and the difference between the two dialects in years is not more than three hundred and fifty? Could the pundits explain why the Tamil spoken in Jaffna has more Malayalam words than that is spoken in Tamil Nadu? Do the pundits know that the Vellalas were taken from Tamil Nadu to South Africa as well by the Dutch? In South Africa Vellala means agricultural labourer and in Sri Lanka today Vellalas are considered to constitute the highest cast in the hierarchical cast system of Tamils as a result of an evolution under colonialism. If the Tamils had been in Sri Lanka from ancient days it is natural that the Brahmin caste became the highest cast as in the Hindu societies in India. Even in Tamil Nadu there is no prominent cast by the name Vellala, and it is clear that Vellalism is a typical Sri Lankan phenomenon. The agricultural labourers imported from the present day Tamil Nadu have evolved to become farmers and become the dominant caste Tamilizing the descendents of the Sinhala people living in Jaffna at the time of the arrival of Dutch, and of course at the time when the Portuguese came, and pushing them downwards in the hierarchical Tamil society into so called low casts such as Nalavar and Koviar. Incidentally Koviar is derived from Sinhala Govia and the Koviars were the farmers in Jaffna when the Dutch decided to bring agricultural labour from Coramandel Coast for their tobacco cultivation.

It is not clear whether the Karaivars in Jaffna are the Tamilized descendents of Sinhala Karawas living in Jaffna but it is unlikely that the Dutch or the Portuguese brought these people from present day Tamil Nadu. It is clear that the Dutch had no intention of bringing Brahmins or priests from South India as there was no need for priests in Jaffna as far as the former were concerned. In the absence of Brahmins, as a result of evolution under colonialism which favoured Vellalas, the latter became the dominant and also the oppressive caste in Jaffna. The Vellalas became the favourite caste of the English as well, and the Jaffna Tamils came to be synonymous with Vellalas especially as far as Colombo was concerned. As a result the Vellalas were used by the English against the Sinhalas and especially the Sinhala Buddhists. The Vellalas were favoured by the English who wanted a certain Vellala family to become the “first family” of Sri Lanka. If one “researches” into this family one would realize that they were brought to Sri Lanka by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. As a result of English favouritism and American missionary work there were more English speaking Vellalas than English speaking Sinhalas in the country and the differential treatment by the English gave the impression to the Vellalas that they were the dominant people in the country. The English governors favoured the Vellalas, and the so called ethnic problem in Sri Lanka began when in the early part of the nineteenth century the English appointed one member each to represent the Sinhalas who had a history of more than two thousand years by that time and who constituted more than seventy five percent of the population, and the Tamils (to be read as Vellalas) who did not have a history more than hundred and fifty years at that time and did not constitute even ten percent of the population. Where was the democracy of the English? The English gave the Vellala leaders a sense of importance over the Sinhala leaders, and the family chosen by the colonialists thought of themselves as the leaders of the so called Ceylonese nation. The Tamil leaders from that time continued to agitate for more representation for the Tamils than for the Sinhalas in the legislature with connivance of the English governors and they had to give it up after universal franchise was firmly established in the country. It was after the elections to the first Parliament that SJV Chelvanayakam realized that a Tamil could not become the Prime Minister of the country and wanted to establish a separate state for the Tamils in the Northern and Eastern provinces demarcated by the English as late as 1889.

It took about thirty years for the venom poured against the Sinhalas by the English speaking Vellalas to go into the minds of the Tamils both Vellala and non Vellala who did not speak English, and when finally the generation of non Vellala Prabhakaran and Vellala Uma Maheswaran took the leadership there was a battle for supremacy among the Vellalas and the non Vellalas. The Tamil people in Jaffna not to speak those in Batticaloa and other places had been oppressed not by the Sinhalas but by the English and by the Vellalas and it was in order to cover up this oppression as well that the English governors and others including the so called intellectuals and the English speaking Vellalas spread the myth of oppression by the Sinhala Buddhists. The ordinary Tamils had to be brainwashed and implanted their minds with oppression by the Sinhalas, and it took Chelvanayakam and the Illankai Thamil Arasu Kadchchi (Lanka Tamil State Party) and its various avatars about thirty years to succeed in their treacherous attempt. However the English speaking Vellalas could not create a purely anti Sinhala movement among the ordinary Tamils and the struggle between Maheswaran and Prabhakaran ended up with a victory for the non Vellalas. Prabhakaran fought against not only the so called Sinhala Buddhist hegemony of the pundits but against the Vellala domination as well.

The killings of Tamil leaders by the LTTE which was not only an anti Sinhala Buddhist movement but an anti Vellala movement reflected the nature of the struggle of the non Vellalas. An accurate grasp of history as far as possible is essential in solving a “problem” and reconciliation between the Tamils and the Sinhalas is possible only if we understand what has happened in history. The Sinhalas never wanted a separate state nor wanted the Tamils to leave Sri Lanka and it was the Tamils influenced by the myths spread by the English speaking Vellalas who agitated for a separate state. Prabhakaran also took about thirty years to realize his folly of fighting against the Sinhalas, and it will take another thirty or so to reach reconciliation between the Tamils and the Sinhalas. Thirty years is roughly the period of one generation and the government should address the next generation of Tamils in order to achieve this most wanted reconciliation.

SRI LANKA IS NEITHER EGYPT NOR LIBYA

The elections for most of the local bodies are over and the people have again voted for the President and his nationalistic policies, in spite of some of the ministers, MPs, organizers, and some of those who contested. Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse continues to win elections while Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe continues to lose elections. Nobody is bothered to keep a count of the elections lost by Mr. Wickremesinghe and it is very very unlikely that he would win a future election even if the cost of living soars exponentially. It does not mean that young Mr. Sajith Premadasa would win an election for the UNP in the near future. This country has become very much nationalistic and unless the UNP finds a leader who is more nationalistic than Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse I am afraid UNP cannot think of winning elections for some time.

When the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Bahrain fell there were some pundits who thought that the axe will fall on Mr. Rajapakse as well without realizing that the nationalism of those countries is different from that in Sri Lanka. As we have said a number of times Sinhala Buddhist nationalism is dictated by the bottom layers of the society in the sense that it is the common man who decides the path that nationalism should take. In contrast the Tamil nationalism is decided by the leaders and is imposed on the people, and as a result ending up as a racism against the Sinhala Buddhists with of course the blessings of the English led westerners. The best examples in the Sinhala and Tamil societies in this regard are the politics of Bandaranaikes (not Bandaranaike Kumaratunga) and Chelvanayakams. Mr. Bandaranaike had to follow Sinhala Buddhist nationalism whereas Chelvanayakam moved by his anti Sinhala Buddhist attitudes and instigated by the English had to create a Tamil nationalism among the masses almost from scratch beginning in late forties, more than sixty years ago. Prior to that Tamil racism was confined to the English speaking Tamil Vellalas in Colombo. Mrs. Bandaranaike too understood the phenomenon of Sinhala nationalism though her daughters never learnt anything from their parents. They learnt only from Rupasinghes, Kumaratunges, Saravanamuttus and lots of other anti Sinhala Buddhist elements.

Sri Lanka Freedom party is the party of Sinhala nationalism in the sense that sometimes in spite of the leaders it is the masses, not necessarily being members of the party, who influence the party. The SLFP was formed as a liberal party by Mr. Bandaranaike, but very soon the Sinhala Buddhist masses who had wanted a political party “acquired” the party. It was a peoplisation of the party and those pundits who imported Chandrika Kumaratunga from her self exile in England to change the policies of the party, and establish a federal state in the country could only postpone history by about a decade. If Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse had been made the leader of the party instead of Chandrika Kumaratunga Nandikadal would have happened in the twentieth century itself. Mr. Rajapakse coming from Medamulana understands Sinhala Buddhist nationalism by instinct and his anti colonialism is in his blood so to say. In this regard he is the successor of Mrs. Bandaranaike, and the SLFP is in safe hands.

The nationalism and anti colonialism of Sinhala Buddhists, stem from Mahavamsa, and that is the very reason that the western intellectuals and their third rate imitators in Sri Lanka who masquerade as professors, thinkers, researches, intellectuals and what not are afraid of that book. Sinhala Buddhists do not need a Marx to be anti colonialists as their nationalism inspired by Mahavamsa does not consider economics as the most important entity that determines the history of the nation. It is the preservation of Sinhala Theravada Buddhism that is of paramount interest to the Sinhala Buddhists, after king Gemunu the hero of Mahavamsa. In a sense Mahavamsa can be considered as the book of Gemunu, and after its publication there has been no need for red books of Mao or even green books of various authors. Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse does not need even a new blue book as blue is the colour of God Vishnu who has been entrusted with the preservation of Budususana by Shakra Devendra himself on the advise of Budun Vahanse. I am told that the colour of the party was selected based on this fact, and Mahavamsa could be easily considered as the blue book. The Mahinda Chinthana reminds the reader not only of Mihindu Maha Rahathan Vahanse but Mahavamsa as well.

Neither the Marxists nor anybody else had to instruct the Sinhala Buddhists on anti colonialism as the latter had fought against three European colonialists continuously and consistently. The struggle against colonialism is continuing under the leadership of Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse. The westerners are determined to send Mr. Rajapakse to the guillotine but even with the support of all the western diplomats, western media such as channel four, western intellectuals, the NGO personnel in Sri Lanka, have failed miserably, as the overwhelming majority of the Sinhala Buddhists with experience of struggle against colonialists for five centuries are with Mr. Rajapakse.

What the pundits do not understand is that even two thousand two hundred years after the defeat of Elara Sinhala Buddhists still honour the memory of Gemunu and the nationalism of Sinhala Buddhists is not going to give up Mr. Rajapakse two years after Nandikadal for a coconut or a nut. Mr. Wickremesinghe who is essentially a Christian and an alien by culture is no match for Mr. Rajapakse and many Sinhala Buddhists would consider the former as a friend of the western Christian culture if not an agent of the same. Then Mr. Sajith Premadasa is neither here nor there as a nationalist and he does not have much of an appeal. Even his father was not considered as a nationalist by the Sinhala Buddhist masses though through his populist politics he played the role of a nationalist against the villain J R Jayawardhene who was called Yankee Dickey for his loyality to the Americans. The JVP has been reduced to a three wheeler party and if not for the manape (preferential voting) they would not have won a single seat in any of the local bodies. The JVP is strong as long as it follows nationalistic policies in a coalition with the SLFP, and the moment it resorts to Marxist policies it becomes another “revolutionary party” without any mass base. We repeat, the Sinhala Buddhists do not need Marx or any western intellectual to fight against colonialism, as they are inspired by Gemunu Raju, one of the greatest characters in world history though not recognized as such, mainly because those who matter in the west hate him from the bottoms of their hearts.

The UNP has no future under Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe but there does not seem to be an alternative. Mr. Sajith Premadasa would be supported by a section of the JVP while the other section of the party will gravitate towards the Trotskyite parties as they had been previously, thus splitting the “revolutionary party of Sri Lanka”. There is no need for a so called revolutionary party for the Sinhalas and the Sinhala Buddhists would not even say “sabbe sankara anicca” over the split and the party ending up as another three wheeler party.

It should be clear by now that the west has been trying to oust Mr. Rajapakse using many models. Serbian model was the first they tried using Tamil racism that has been passed on to the lower rungs by the upper crusts of the Tamil society. The west wanted to frame charges of war crimes against Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse as well as Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse using Sarath Fonseka but they have failed miserably. It is also clear that their NGO agents in Sri Lanka are not doing a proper job for their masters and mistresses but are only collecting those cheques for massive amounts from the western embassies. Even if they did a proper job they would not have been able to oust Mr. Rajapakse and it is to the despair of the west that none of the methods has given them any positive results. In Egypt the west without much of a problem used anti Mubarak forces to oust the latter who was one of their allies, before it got worse. In Libya they want Gadhafi ousted not only because of oil but because the Libyan President is anti Christian west as well. It is not only economics that is at work as the western Christian modernity has its cultural colonization programme as well. The pundits who can only quote others ignore that western Christian colonialism has three interdependent components viz., economical, political and cultural.

The west claims that Gadhafi bombed his own people though there is no evidence for that. If we remember the allegations made against Mr. Rajapakse one would understand the meanings of the words used by the westerners. There appears to be a rebellion against the Libyan President in Benghazi but the west says that Gadhafi should have negotiated with the so called rebels. On the assumption that Gadhafi did not negotiate with the “rebellions” and attacked his own countrymen the west is now firing missiles to Libya without any negotiations with Gadhafi or any warnings given to the Libyans. There is no rationale behind this move and as the security council consists of the biggest thugs USA, UK among others, it is our duty to tell the west not to engage in any more activities in Libya as the Libyans can look after themselves. At the same time especially America, England and France have to be warned not to engage in military exercises in other countries in the name of humanitarianism or right to protect or what not as irrespective of the name used it amounts to colonialism as long as there is no symmetry in the process. For example Sri Lanka, Libya and say Myanmar and Iran cannot take action against England for not treating the non Anglicans on the same footing as the Anglicans or against Israel for bombing Palestine. I know that our demands to England, France and USA would fall on deaf ears as they still have the power not only of politics and economics but of knowledge as well. It is not we who create knowledge but the westerners and they will justify their action with terms such as right to protect democracy, freedom of expression, human rights etc., concealing the fact that these terms are loaded in favour of the west, and they think of human rights etc., as having some absolute values though these rights are only relative to the western Judaic Christian culture.

The west would have loved to send troops to Nandikadal and arrest not Prabhakaran but the Rajapakses, and to make Sarath Fonseka their puppet ruler in Sri Lanka not because he comes from Ambalangoda, but because his policies suit the west. Fonseka would have been preferred to Wickremesinghe as the former could have been referred to as the Sinhala Buddhist leader of the army. Their ambitions did not materialize due to the correct political leadership of Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse, the spiritual strength of the Sinhalas, the Vishnu factor and of course the heroic sacrifices of the armed forces.
