Independence is a process –V

As we have said already the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations is just another weapon in the armoury of western Christian colonialism used against the countries and governments that do not follow the dictates of the western countries. If Sri Lanka had not defeated the LTTE terrorists against the wish of the western countries nothing would have happened in Geneva as far as Sri Lanka is concerned. Further had the west being successful in establishing an Eelam with Ranil Wickremesinghe in Colombo and Prabhakaran in Kilinochchi, and had the Sinhala people rose against the Wickremesinghe government in Colombo only to be murdered by the government forces then again Navi Pillai would have been lost in the suburbia of Geneva. In fact the west would have supported the Wickremesinghe government to massacre the Sinhala people. It is a case of maintaining puppet governments by western Christian colonialism and destabilizing those not liked by the west. Navi Pillai is after all a paid servant of the west and she has to do a job to earn her bread.

Recently I was asked by the presenter at a talk show as to how various different forces such as the dispersed Tamils, Channel four, the human rights people, the NGOs, western countries have got together against the Sri Lankan government. The answer is very simple as all these organizations have the same origin in western Christian colonialism which sponsors and finances all of them. Even the Marxist parties owe their survival to western Christian colonialism in the present epoch and one is not surprised to find the three wheeler Marxist parties in Sri Lanka forming a so called united opposition with the conservatives and liberals against the government which was able to stand up to the threats of the west. Most of these organizations belong to the cultural component of western Christian colonialism and as the cultural component is more significant in the present epoch of colonialism these organizations are given prominence. There are many gullible middle class educated people who are fooled easily by the western countries, after all the educated people have an education given by the west, who think that the innocent western governments are misled by the dispersed Tamils, and that these Tamils are in a position to influence the elections in some of the western countries. It is nothing but the truth and is a myth spread by the western countries themselves. The western intellectuals are very good at creating such stories, which sometime go by the name theories, and the gullible educated people in Sri Lanka waste no time in believing these stories. The Muslims in France and England are more influential than the dispersed Tamils as far as elections are concerned, but the governments of these countries do not go out of way to please the Muslims. On the contrary these governments would impose restrictions on the dress and cultural habits of the Muslims indicating clearly that they are not after the votes of the Muslim people. The government in England sponsors dispersed Tamils and have no objections when Tamil organizations headed by Catholic priests and others who are antagonistic to Buddhists meet in the Westminster Parliamentary buildings.

The UNP claims that the US resolution at the human rights commission is against the government but not against the people of the country. It is not clear as to what is meant by people by the UNP, but the west is certainly against the majority of the Sinhala Buddhists and the Muslims of the country. The west considers the Sinhala Buddhist culture and the Muslim culture as threats to the Judaic Christian culture and the western countries did not care for the human rights of the Bhikkus and Sinhala Buddhists who were massacred by the Tamil terrorists sponsored by the west. We do not know where Navi Pillai was when the Sinhala Buddhists were being killed by the LTTE terrorists and the channel four probably did not have cameras at that time. The west may not be against the Olcott Buddhists but they would do anything possible to destroy the Sinhala Buddhist culture.

The installments of the mega teledrama produced by Channel Four and directed by Navi Pillai and Company will not end with the video on Prabhakaran’s son. There will be others to follow in the installments to be released and we should not take these seriously. They are frauds, fakes and the Channel four has done a favour to the Sinhala Buddhists by producing the teledrama teaching them the tactics of western Christian colonialism. We should not attach any importance to bogus human rights commission in Geneva, and treat it with contempt it deserves. We should not send ministers as members of our delegation to Geneva and let the diplomats handle Navi Pillai and company. The UNP that thought of Medawachchi when the armed forces were in Kiliknochchi and proclaimed that any fool can get involved in a “war” has no right to talk of human rights of the Tamils who were used as a human shield by the LTTE. The Sri Lankan armed forces did their best to protect these innocent people and if anybody is responsible for the violation of their human rights it is the LTTE and those clergy, the politicians, and the western countries who were behind the LTTE and tried to protect the LTTE leaders. As a corollary the UNP and Ranil Wickremesinghe who signed that infamous ceasefire agreement in Vavunia with Prabhakaran while the latter was in Medawachchi, sorry Killinochchi, are also responsible for the violation of the human rights of the innocent Tamils in Pudukuduirrippu. The western Christian colonialism and its various instruments such as the NGOs which are responsible for the violation of the human rights of the human shield ironically accuse the government and the Sinhala Buddhists who did their best to protect the lives of these people.

This is the face of the present phase of western Christian colonialism and the government should not give in to western colonialism in Geneva. There should be no compromise with US and England which is spearheading the attack against Sri Lankan government and the Sinhala Buddhists, and the government should be prepared to be defeated in Geneva even with a bigger vote in favour of the US resolution than in last year. Any compromise with the US on the resolution would amount to a betrayal of the armed forces, and would make sure that the Sinhala Buddhists would alienate from the government. Geneva is neither the end nor the beginning of western Christian colonialism and there would be other “springs” such as the cricket spring and the clergy spring waiting in the wings. The Katunayake, Fisheries, Academic and Hulftsdorp springs turned out to be winters for the sponsors of the springs and a cricket spring with Compton Lecturers would turn out to be a snow storm if the government does not compromise on the US resolution. The government does not have to be ashamed of its record during the humanitarian operations, and it is the UNP and the western Christian colonialism that have to answer the Sinhala Buddhists and the Tamil human shield for the violation of their human rights. It has to be remembered that the government is not answerable to the so called international community which is only another name for the western Christian colonialism. The government is responsible only to the people in this country and as long as there is no symmetry in relationship with the other countries the government should consider these countries with nothing but contempt.

The west would think not only of other springs but also of economic sanctions against Sri Lanka which would work against the people of the country, except those who are probably fed by the western embassies. The UN charter may not permit economic sanctions but one should not expect the western Christian colonialists to honour the charter when it comes to weakening other cultures in the world. The President reminded this horrible feature of western Christian colonialism in his address to the nation on the independence day and we should be prepared for economic sanctions in the near future. We have to have our own way of life instead of following the western way blindly and we should establish trade links with non western countries. The independence is a process as western Christian colonialism is a process changing its ugly white face continuously and full independence would be won only after we become independent of the knowledge created in the Judaic Christian culture. Defending the constitution

I had the opportunity of watching the entire second inauguration of Barack Obama on Sunday and Monday on television. On Sunday it was a private ceremony and on Monday which happened to be the Martin Luther King day it was a public ceremony with all pomp and pageant attended by nearly a million of people. On Sunday, Obama placed his hand on a Bible used for years by Michelle Obama's family. On Monday, he took the oath using two Bibles, one owned by Martin Luther King and one by Abraham Lincoln. On both occasions he said “I Barack Hussein Obama do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States. And will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God,” his hand on Bibles. I did not see any African culture during the ceremony and whatever the origin of Obama may be it was a hundred percent Anglo Saxon Protestant Christian affair with Obama asking the help of the God (definitely not Allah) to defend the Christian constitution of the USA with hand on Bibles. No civic rights movement people were there to ask Obama to speak in Spanish or to respect the other religions by at least inviting the clergy of those religions. The Sarva Agamika concept is not in the vocabulary of the Americans and I propose that we send some Sarva agamika Clergy to USA to teach a lesson or two on that concept to the white house people. I could not see Navanitham Pillai or even Ban Ki Moon among the distinguished gathering inside, perhaps they were mingling with the people, whom Obama referred to as We the People more than ten times during his brief speech. The public ceremony came to an end with a rendering of the National Anthem of USA sung in English only. Though there are a substantial number of Spanish speaking people even if we go by the nomenclature of Sambandhan, no Spanish was spoken and no translations of the speeches into Spanish were given during the entire ceremony. I thought there would be at least a sprinkle of Aboriginal culture but during the entire ceremony no mention was made of the aboriginals. Barack Obama is only dark in colour but in all the other aspects he is a white Anglo Saxon Protestant upholding the Christian constitution of the USA. This is something that a former envoy of Sri Lanka in a western Christian country could not understand by claiming that the Americans had elected a black American as the President. If any Tamil leader is prepared to respect the Sinhala culture and consider it as the significant culture I am sure that he would be considered for the President of Sri Lanka.

I do not mention these facts in order for our civil rights Gandhians and Lutherians to take the next plane to Washington to begin a civil rights movement so that at least by the next inauguration the ceremony would be conducted in Spanish as well and that the National Anthem would be sung in Spanish and an aboriginal language in addition to English. Anglo Saxon white Protestant Christian culture is the dominant culture not only in USA but in the whole world. All that I want to emphasize is that due recognition should be given to the Sinhala Buddhist culture without demeaning that culture by invalid arguments brought out by a hatred that the westerners and the Tamil racists have for the same. In the meantime I am worried by Obama’s statement to the effect that the Americans are committed to defend democracy in Asia and Africa. The problem with that concept is that the democracy is of the American people, by the American people for the American people. It is this democracy that Obama wants to defend in Asia and Africa and not the democracy that the Asian and African people would like to protect. Just as much Obama has taken an oath to defend the American constitution Mahinda Rajapakse has taken an oath to defend the constitution of Sri Lanka whether it is bahubutha or not. The other countries including USA should recognize the sovereignty of Sri Lanka by allowing Mahinda Rajapakse to defend the constitution.

The impeachment of the CJ is purely an internal matter of Sri Lanka and no foreigner however powerful he or she may be, should interfere with the procedure or the judgment given by the President. When the Appeal Court granted leave to proceed with the petitions filed praying for a writ to issue on the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) the Appeals court was in error to say the least. I have argued that the Appeals Court has no jurisdiction on this aspect in these columns and elsewhere and I do not want to repeat those arguments. I am not a lawyer by training but I am confident of my reasoning and arguments. The Appeals Court, meaning the three judges who sat on the bench referred a certain question to the Supreme Court on the grounds that they were requesting an interpretation of the constitution. The way the question was drafted and also the answer that the three judges who sat on the Supreme Court leave doubts on the minds of the average people such as me as to the genuineness. It is true that the Supreme Court is the sole authority on interpretation of the constitution but there are few questions that have to be asked with respect to this matter. It is a case involving the punishment of a judge and not an ordinary case. The disciplinary actions of judges are no ordinary matters and the constitution lays down a separate procedure when it comes to disciplinary matters of the judges. There is no provision in the constitution or elsewhere for an accused judge to appeal against the judgments of the President in such cases and the President cannot give arbitrary judgments as he is guided by the Article 107 (2) of the constitution. The Appeals court in their hurry quashed a decision of the PSC, which was only a finding and not a sentence or a judgment, depending on a so called interpretation of the constitution the Supreme Court. The appeals court is not empowered by Article 139 or 140 or any other article to quash a judgment that had not been given and also to interfere with deliberations of the parliament according to Article 80. There was no judgment to be quashed as at that stage the President had not removed the CJ. The Appeals Court had only a finding by the PSC which was an instrument of the Parliament that had judiciary powers together with the President in the case of disciplinary actions against the judges.

The Supreme Court amended the Article 107 (3) in the guise of an interpretation thus encroaching on the powers of the Parliament. In any event under 107(3) the Parliament could either by law or by standing orders provide the forum with the procedures etc., to “impeach” a judge. The standing orders are no law in the sense that they are not acts of Parliament but 107 (3) is law and abiding by that Article is not against the law nor illegal. The Supreme Court amended 107(3) and removed the words “or by standing orders” in that Article. In any event the parliament had acted in accordance with 107 (3) which is law in appointing the PSC as provided by standing orders 78 (A). Does the Supreme Court say that acting according to 107 (3) is illegal? The Supreme Court and the Appeals Court appear to have given unlawful judgments and have failed to uphold the constitution. The parliament on the other hand upheld the constitution and acted within the powers that have been invested in it by the constitution. The President has defended the constitution and not acted violating the constitution. However, the President and the Parliament are accused by the Brahmins and Navaneetham Pillais, the Canadian Prime Minister, commonwealth stalwarts and others for not upholding the constitution. They on the other hand praise the Appeals Court and the Supreme Court that have failed to uphold the constitution encroaching on the powers of the Parliament, and quashing judgments that had not been given.

President Obama is supposed to defend the American constitution in USA and not in other countries. Unfortunately it is the American democracy that is being defended everywhere in the world and when our courts act in a way so as to defend the American democracy they are praised condemning the President and the Parliament that have defended our constitution even if it is a bahubhutha constitution. The government that could not be influenced by the western powers, India and Brahmins during the humanitarian operations would not bow down to these powers and would only laugh at the claim by the impeached lady who still claims to be the CJ. On the other hand though the government should consider the possibility of impeaching the judges who have not upheld and defended the constitution it is unlikely that the government would do so and pardon them.

On Muslim protests - nonpublished

Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe in his letter to the editor on Muslim protests states: “Nalin Silva’s account of the nature of the recent Muslim riots over the video trailer, "Innocence of Muslims," has missed focus on the real situation. Attempting as he does to relate it to what he calls the Western-Christian hegemony does not help our comprehension of the event.”. Unfortunately it is not clear what it is meant by the words “relate it”. Relate what? There were three events that we have to consider. Firstly the production of the relevant video, secondly the protests by most of the Muslims all over the world against the video, and finally condemning of the protests by the western media and the claim by them that the producer had the freedom of expression to produce the film. What I had said in my article published on 19th September was the following on western Christian supremacy. “When the western media tells us that the person who made the film had the right to do so they talk from their vantage position as everything in this world is today decided by the western Christian supremacy. It is true that in the west they have made films such as Da Vinci Code, though the film was banned in Sri Lanka if my memory is correct, but these films are made in a world dominated by western Christian hegemony. The book and the film Da Vinci Code were produced by western Christian culture who are looking for a new interpretation of Jesus Christ against the Jesus of the Catholic Church. This should be the last step in the fight of Christianity against Catholicism, and I was not surprised when the Catholic Church here decided to ask the Sri Lankan government to ban the film.”

I was neither concerned whether the producer of the video belonged to a minority Christian sect nor whether he was not born in the west. There may be thousands of Christian sects but generally they can be grouped under Catholic and Christian (non Catholic) though there are exceptions. Whether a person is born in Sri Lanka or Australia, generally he would belong to a culture and the latter is important as the way we look at the world (as they say grasp the world, though there is no one given world as such) is determined (created) by the culture and is based on what I call the chinthanaya. The person who produced the video did not try to defame Jesus Christ but Prophet Mohamed and his act has been governed by his general cultural view of the “world”, whatever the sect he belongs to. The Muslims were offended, and they protested against the video. Then the western media came to defend the producer appealing to freedom of speech. This defense was originated by a group in the western world with the help of the western Christian supremacy. Nothing would happen to the producer and as I had mentioned the protests have now been subdued with the help of some Muslim leaders as well, and the western Christian supremacy reins without any problem. The Muslims regardless of Iraq invasion etc., have fought and are fighting against Catholic as well as Christian cultural supremacies for more than a thousand of years and whether the video was produced by a Christian of a minority sect or a mainstream Christian the video appears to be an attack against the Muslim culture.

Mr. Jayasinghe has completely missed the point regarding Da Vinci Code. I am of the view that there has been another cultural “war” or a struggle between the Catholic Chinthanaya and the Christian Chinthanaya spreading over more than five hundred years. The Christian Chinthanaya has defeated the Catholic Chinthanaya on many counts, and today the dominant culture of the world including Australia is the Anglo Saxon variety of the (non Catholic) Christian culture. There may be local differences among the Anglo Saxon countries but in general their culture dominates the world. Whether one is an Atheist or not, or even if one does not practice a religion, it is immaterial in these cultural “conflicts”. Though the Christian culture is the dominant culture in the world ironically those who belong to that culture do not have their own Jesus. Books such as Da Vinci Code are attempts to “create” a Jesus who was married in contrast to the Catholic Jesus who did not marry, and there have been such efforts in the last five hundred years. Thus Da Vinci Code is produced in a Christian culture and not against it, though the Catholic culture would have been offended by the book as well as the film. The Christian culture is not happy with the Jesus of the Catholic culture, and is evolving towards a culture without a God in the Catholic sense. The Christian culture would in general not protest against Da Vinci Code and it was left to the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka to get the film banned in the country. It has to be reminded that though many Buddhists protested against “Bavatharanaya” written imitating the tradition of so called realistic novel of the western Christian modernity, the book was never banned in the country.

MULTICULTURALISM IN THE NON WESTERN WORLD

Multiculturalism in the west implies monoculturalism and the hegemony of the western Judaic Christian culture. The rest of the cultures are allowed to be present as long as they do not pause a threat to the western Judaic Christian culture. Multiculturalism certainly does not mean equiculturalism and all the cultures other than the western Judaic Culture are present always in a subservient manner with respect to the hegemonic western Judaic Christian culture. For example the Sinhala Buddhists living in USA or UK are allowed to observe the Wesak full moon day in temples in the cities and towns but not on the Wesak day itself but on the following Saturday or most probably the following Sunday. Though Wesak is supposed to be an international holiday, whatever is meant by that, people go to work on that day and observe sil on the following Sunday. However, the westerners could not maintain this hypocrisy of multiculturalism for long as the Islamic culture which is more aggressive than most of the other cultures has come to the forefront not only in some Muslim countries but in some of the big (influential) western countries themselves. The west cannot afford to be silent under the pretext of multiculturalism when Islamic culture is challenging western Judaic culture in the lion’s den as if it were, and the western politicians have begun to chant their mantra that multiculturalism has failed. If Islamic culture like the other cultures confined itself to the mosque and occasional religious festivals the west would be still shouting from roof tops how multiculturalism is working wonderfully in those countries. I am waiting for a postmodernist to deconstruct multiculturalism in the west and show to the world that it is monoculturalism with the hegemony of western Judaic Christian culture being felt from supermarket to the legislature and from pre-school to the university. However postmodernism being part of hegemonic Judaic Christian culture is very unlikely to attempt at difficult deconstructions.

How does multiculturalism work in the so called non western world? There are some quarter bright academics in the universities who have gone on Fulbright scholarships or fellowships and others who think that they belong to the centre of the left without realizing that they have been left out by the society with the former opining that we reject anything from the west claiming that it is Judaic Christian while the latter claiming that the so called nation state model of the west is used by whom they call the so called Jathika Chinthanaya group. It is clear that they tell two different stories in respect of our “borrowings” or “absorptions” from the knowledge created in the west. Perhaps they should organize yet another seminar in a five star hotel to find out what we are up to in the Chinthana Parshadaya. I can help them by giving our thoughts on multiculturalism in the non western world with special reference to Sri Lanka, the way these pundits title their profound theses and dissertations.

Multiculturalism or any other concept is defined in the west whether the quarter bright would accept it or not. What some of these people would not know is that knowledge is constructed and not discovered, and that knowledge is constructed relative to the sense organs, the mind and the culture in human societies. We emphasize, unlike those who have been slaves of western knowledge that the concepts, theories etc., found in different societies differ from each other. Western knowledge is created in what we call the Greek Judaic Christian Chinthanaya and of course in the western Judaic Christian culture. The Judaic Christian Chinthanaya should not have a monopoly in creating knowledge, though at present except for a very few in Sri Lanka the western knowledge is considered to be discovered according to some ill defined scientific method, and thus giving it the status of a corpus of absolute truth. We do not have the freedom to chose, if I may use terms used by the westerners for their propaganda work, a system of knowledge that is suitable for us. We are enforced to teach and learn knowledge created in the west and if that is not colonialism what is colonialism?

We are not scared of western knowledge, and having had access to some parts of that knowledge I know how weak is the foundations on which the western knowledge is built. If not for western technology and the power of politics, western knowledge would not have survived and unlike our critiques claim there is no reason as to why we should be scared of western knowledge. However, we do not reject western knowledge and we would absorb any western knowledge that is suitable to our society and assimilate it into our culture without imitating it. We do not have to borrow the concept of a so called nation state as Gemunu who ruled this country some two thousand three hundred years ago had introduced the concept of the Sinhala Buddhist state which could be called an eksesath rajya. The eksesath rajya has some features of the nation state and for this reason some pundits would think that we work within the ambit of nation state and have no alternative.

Multiculturalism as far as the non western world is concerned is equiculturalism as the western intellectuals and the politicians want that way as far as the cultures other than the Judaic Christian culture. The westerners who define and interpret concepts for the others want the non western world to treat the cultures that are present in a particular country other than the Judaic Christian culture to be equal. However, that does not mean that these cultures are given the highest place when it comes to governing, education from nursery to the university, political structures, economic models etc., are concerned. In these activities in which usually the so called elite in a country are involved, the Judaic Christian culture reins supreme. The citizens of a country adopt their own cultures in the other fields and in many countries a particular culture is chosen due to historical and social conditions as the predominant culture, though the westerners would have wanted all the other cultures to be treated equally.

For example in India the western Judaic Christian culture is the supreme and hegemonic culture in the fields that have been mentioned above and nobody in the elite society would challenge the status quo for the fear of losing social status. In the other fields Hindu culture is accepted as the predominant culture and Dhoni would swear that more than seventy five percent of the cricketers in the Indian squad for the world cup were Hindus. We were shown on television how Hindu devotees celebrated the winning of the world cup in cricket originated in Christian England (there is a school of thought according to which cricket originated in France of all the places) in the traditional Hindu ways but there were no sarva agamika celebrations. All the cultures in India in the other fields are not equal and the supremacy of Hindu culture is not questioned in India.

It is in Sri Lanka that multiculturalism in the fields other than education etc., are interpreted to be equiculturalism and it is only recently that the Sinhalas have become aware of various interpretations of multiculturalism.

MULTICULTURALISM IN THE WEST

Many things have been said on multiculturalism by people who have lived in the western countries and also by those who live in Sri Lanka echoing their masters and mistresses. Once the masters fail to “grasp” the world due to their incompetence and ignorance the imitators have no chance at all, but they do not realize that the masters and the mistresses are only singing the swan song. We have number of times tried to expose the myths surrounding terms such as multiculturalism, human rights, fundamental rights etc. that have been coined by the intellectuals in the west in order to safeguard their system. The knowledge created by the western intellectuals whether in Physics or Sociology is used by the politicians, sometimes with the connivance of the former, to oppress the people in the other parts of the world. Knowledge is the most powerful weapon used by western Christian modernity to keep their empire going without giving the others an opportunity to realize what is happening. Occasionally so called radical intellectuals in the west would come out with concepts such as neocolonialism which give the impression that there is only economic colonialism or perhaps political colonialism concealing the most dangerous cultural colonialism. Multiculturalism meant monoculturalism as far as the west is concerned and it is clear that the concept has failed and the western intellectuals will have to create another concept or to reinterpret multiculturalism to suit western cultural colonialism.

If some politicians in the west claim that multiculturalism has failed then it implies that they have not achieved what they had wanted to achieve using this particular concept. Multiculturalism has been used in two different ways in the west and the rest of the world. In the western countries multiculturalism meant allowing the non Christian communities to continue with their cultural practices while Christian cultures dominating in education, formal as well as non formal, in politics and in general in everyday life. This became a necessity for two reasons. Many people of non Christian cultures migrated to “mother” countries such as England and France in large numbers and with the world becoming “smaller” mainly due to air travel and television the migrants could retain links with their countries of origin culturally at least superficially. The Sinhala Buddhists living in many parts of the west have established temples with Bhikkus invited from Sri Lanka attending to the cultural needs of the community. Then they also invite artistes from Sri Lanka and with modern technology they have been able to have CDs videos that capture aspects of Sinhala Buddhist culture. It has been possible to import vegetables fruits and sweetmeats from Sri Lanka and also from some other Asian and African countries and one would find coconut scrapers in many Sinhala homes. The Sinhala Buddhists have also set up ‘daham pasal” and the children take part in many cultural shows and the Sinhala Buddhist culture is “preserved” in the homes of the migrants at least in English or French medium, as some of the children are not very fluent in Sinhala to say the least.

I have given the example of the Sinhala Buddhist families but it is true in general. There is a sense of multiculturalism but the dominant culture is nothing but western Judaic Christian culture. A pundit may say that there is no homogeneous western culture but though there may be differences, in essence the dominating culture is nothing but Judaic Christian. The dominant culture is felt and seen everywhere from the supermarket to media and from pre school to university and one cannot escape this influence by establishing daham pasal. When the daham pasal in Sri Lanka are a poor distant relative in the educational system in Sri Lanka itself there is very little one could expect from the daham pasal in the west. As mentioned above Sinhala Buddhist culture is preserved in English or French as the case may be in the western countries.

The Sinhala Buddhists living in the west are not aggressive and many of them would celebrate Easter, Christmas etc., with Easter eggs, Christmas trees and all the other paraphernalia associated with these events. Queen’s birthday, thanksgiving day etc., are important days in the calendar of some of the Sinhala Buddhists, and in general they would not try to exhibit their Sinhala Bauddhakama to the society at large. Except when the ladies wear the saree (especially osariya) it is difficult even for a “knowledgeable) native white person to identify Sinhala Buddhists shopping in the local supermarket going by cultural symbols. The Sinhala Buddhists are definitely not a threat to western Judaic Christian culture and no Sinhala Buddhist “scholar” living in the west would dare to challenge the dominance of western Christian knowledge and certainly no Sinhala Buddhist organization would demand that Buddhism should be made compulsory at schools. This kind of existence of a culture did not matter at all to the west and the westerners would “proudly” say that that there was cultural freedom in their countries and could coin the word multiculturalism as if equal status had been given to all the cultures in the country. Of course, the westerners knew multiculturalism meant only many cultures existing superficially but not equiculturalism at all. They thought that allowing little freedom to practice the relevant culture would not do any harm and the Judaic Christian culture would dominate without any challenge. In fact it was a case of more the merrier as the number of cultures existing in a country increased they would not organize themselves into one group to challenge the Judaic Christian culture.

However, this would not proceed the way the westerners expected mainly due to the Islamic culture. It is very aggressive and also dominating. Cultures such as Sinhala Buddhist would not have survived in the west if not for the world becoming “smaller” but there are two cultures in the world other than the Judaic Christian culture that would survive under the most challenging conditions. It is true that the Sri Lankan Tamils in the west have become boisterous in the recent past but that has happened under very different conditions. The Tamil Hindu culture is not aggressive in general though the Cholas attempted to dominate the South and South East Asia. It was more Chola than Tamil and could be attributed to the aggressive Chola political attitudes more than to Hindu culture. The Sri Lankan Tamils in the west have become aggressive under the auspices of the English and the other western nations, and the moment the patronage given to them by the west is withdrawn they would become submissive. The two cultures I have in mind are the Jewish culture and the Islamic culture. Both of them have the same origins in the western Asia, and Europeans first found the Jewish culture to be very dominating and aggressive. Shakespeare probably was a witness to the struggle between the Christian culture and the Jewish culture and the two cultures have come to some understanding with the emergence of the Judaic Christian culture though it may not be very deep. The Catholic culture has not shown any mercy to the Jews as Hitler and German Catholic culture were to demonstrate but today it is the Judaic Christian culture that is dominating the world. The Judaic Christian culture is facing the greatest challenge from the Islamic culture and the west has realized that their “soft skills” are not quite adequate in managing multiculturalism as far as Islamic culture is concerned.

Islamic culture has been a threat to Europe from the Iberian empire days and it could even be speculated that the Christian and the Jewish cultures came to an understanding under the threat of Islamic culture. The struggle between the Judaic Christian culture and the Islamic culture is taking place over the globe and it has been continuing for the last sixty years or so in the Palestine and the western Asia and also in North Africa. Libya is neither only oil nor democracy as most of the western educated pundits would say but culture as well. The struggle has been carried over to Europe and the westerners find that the concept of ‘multiculturalism” is not going to help them anymore. Islamic cultural challenge has to be defeated and when the western politicians claim that multiculturalism has failed we know what they mean by that.
